Chateau d'Yquem 2005 Sauternes (750ml)
Ian tasted the 2005 d'Yquem at the Chateau in July 2015 and thanks to his contacts we are able to bring you this wonderful offer. The wine comes directly from Chateau d’Yquem so it has been cellared in the best of circumstances. As with all our import shipments this wine has been shipped to Australia in a refrigerated container at a constant 15C and it will be stored in our refrigerated warehouse in Central Victoria prior to shipment to you.
2005 was an extraordinary vintage for Sauternes as well as red Bordeaux, this is quite rare.
Jancis Robinson awarded the 2005 Chateau d’Yquem a perfect score of 20/20 and you can read her tasting notes below.
Yield of 12 hl/ha – almost record high levels! Quite deep gold. Wonderfully deep nose – never smelt anything as intense and glorious as this! Extraordinary!!! Deep yet lively. Exciting depth of pear juice and zest – tangerine peel too. Great astringency. 2001 was more concentrated. This is more transparent. Lovely dancing stuff, but already in the super-nuanced Yquem idiom. Lighter than some vintages but with great lacy complexity. Wonderful green, lively notes and some real explosiveness – 13.5 per cent. Energy drink! Coiled like a taut spring.
Ian’s tasting notes. July 7, 2015.
Deep yellow in colour. You need to remind yourself that this wine is already 10 years old as the bouquet shows fresh young orange peel and apricot aromas which are only now starting to complex into a slight honeyed aroma. The palate is luscious yet fine and elegant with tremendous length and depth of flavour. The palate finishes with refreshing acidity. No cloying sweetness just perfect balance. A beautiful drink now but many years of cellaring still to come should you wish to put it away for a while.
